Against the Giants, Chapter 1 - A New Quest

To Mirabar and beyond!

The next dawn, a large party of the bravest and most powerful adventurers assembles to accept the charge to punish the miscreant giants. You must deliver a sharp check, deal a lesson to the clan of hill giants near Mirabar, or else return and put their heads upon the block for the headsman's axe!

In a little under a week, you use your steeds to ride north, making excellent progress along the king’s roads first through the city of Luskan (the so-called city of sails) and then east along the river Mirabar. As you gallop eastbound, you spot numerous trading barges travelling along the river from Mirabartowards Luskan. The giants may be running amok, but clearly business is business.

The climate is considerably colder and wetter up here. You left Neverwinter on a late autumn day and it was cool and crisp out. But as you near the Spine of the World, you encounter rain, hail and snow. It seems the sun has lost its will to shine these days.

Mirabar is a sprawling and hardy town that has grown from a mining settlement into a full-fledged trading city. As you reach the town, you notice several of the buildings have been razed. A group of nervous militiamen greet you and usher you to town hall, where Elastul and his henchmen brief you on your mission.

Elastul: “Thank the gods! Neverwinter will suckle the teat of Mirabar, but has taken an age and a half to respond. At last Carrington enlisted you because you are great and powerful warriors, more powerful than we can assemble here,and we need your help to rid this area of this gargantuan menace.”

“It is a curious thing,” the man continues with arms crossed, “for years the giants kept to themselves in the crags, never bothering us unless we came too close to their domain. Sure, there was the occasional rape and murder, but nothing grave. Until now.”

“These oversized abominations have been raiding our merchant lines! We do not have long until the freeze sets in so the boats must continue to move unimpeded. Carrington has put up the bounty and we will provide you with a guide to their steading.”

“We believe that their chief is one named Nosnra, a fat and thoroughly despicable creatures, sly and vicious, who loves ambush and backstabbing.Perhaps he has become restless in his middle age? I doubt it though. I suspecta secret force, for how else can we explain such an unusual banding of different races of giants? Tis not the way of the natural world.”

“If you do find the reason or force behind this unholy alliance, return at once with what you learn.”

“You can keep any valuables you chance upon. It grieves me to say so, for these giants are a greedy sort. And I willpay 5gp for each human slave or survivor who makes it back alive. What can I tell you? The people of Mirabar area sentimental lot.”

“Questions?”

“You leave immediately. Oh, and one last thing… I have two outlanders. Brothers. Both thick-headed barbarian clouts.They will be your guides, as they know the crags well. They seek to join your motley crew.”

The marchion of Mirabar waves at his henchmen, who dutifully bring in two muscle-bound humans. The two young man are shackled at the ankles and wrists and appear to be arguing with each other. Meanwhile, a henchman follows behind them with his arms full of weaponry.

“Now remember what we talked about, eh boys?” barks Elastul with a finger pointing to the goths. “You LEAVE Mirabar. And NO come back. Go KILL GIANTS with your new friends. NO more Mirabar.”

“Ya, ya, gut!” say the brothers. One of them looks up at you. “Ich bin Gunter. Dis ist Helmut. We know ze vay to ze steading. Let’s go kill now!”

By dawn, you have made your way into the snow swept crags and to the steading of the hill giants. You find a safe cave nearby and a trio of young hill giants throwing rocks near said cave. Killing them is a simple matter and the adventurers celebrate. These giants ain't so tough!

Encounter experience: 750 xp total per character (Discovery + giants), 1/2 lot for cardboard.
