Against the Giants, Chapter 2 - The First Assault

With no time to waste, the party sends the hobbit rogue up to the steading to find a good point of attack. Mero manages to circle the steading and to size up the formidable threat. The rogue sneaks his way into the guard tower, where he kills a snoozing giant and gains entry. The hobbit encounters the impatient heroes at the front door, where traps are tripped and giants are dispatched with ruthless efficiency. Now inside the steading, the heroes follow a din coming from double-doors into the great hall of the giant keep.

Here, they unwittingly unleash hell! They have interrupted a huge throng of monsters, resting after a long night of violent carousing. This room contains trestle tables, benches, stools and other over-sized furniture. To the north of a large fire pit (where a whole ox, 2 sheep and 4 pigs roast) is a higher table where the chief, his wife, a cloud giant (!?!), a sub-chief and 3 stone giants are seated. On the wall directly behind the chief is a small ballista. Barrels and kegs of ale, beer and mead stand here and there. All of the tables are full of various sorts of meat, cheese, bread and drinking containers (horns, mugs, cups, etc.).

Words are exchanged as a small army of giants and ogres greets the intrepid heroes with a vicious, short and brutal counter-attack. A call for a retreat goes up. The paladin and magus ignore these calls and fall! The rest of the heroes manage to escape the steading in a mad scramble to safety...
