Interstellar Travel, Trade, and Communication

Hyperspace is a mostly featureless realm that can shorten the distance between points in real space. The hyperspace distance between two real space points depends upon the hyperspace topology. Some routes may be significantly shorter while others may be significantly longer. Faster than light speed is possible along hyperspace routes where the distance is significantly shorter than in real space. Since travel time depends on the hyperspace route, traffic travels along well known paths. Some independent traders claim to know secret short-cuts through hyperspace.

Normal matter in hyperspace breaks down, so spacecraft in hyperspace travel with a special force field that protects them from the effects of hyperspace. The field generators can be active for a limited time, which limits how long a spacecraft can stay in hyperspace. This creates refueling stops in star systems that might have no other interest – the futuristic equivalent of a highway rest stop. These tend to be in the outer orbits where hydrogen (the major fuel) can be mined from gas giants. Since refueling may require a few days wait until a refueling bay is available, the refueling stops usually have accommodation and entertainment.

The initial jump to hyperspace is much more energy intensive than traveling through hyperspace, so most spacecraft rely on jump gates, rather than be fitted with a jump drive. (The jump drive “jumps” to hyperspace while the hyperspace drive propels the spacecraft through hyperspace, once the jump is complete.) Dropping out of hyperspace costs no energy, but if a “jumpless” spacecraft drops out of hyperspace out of range of a jump gate, it will have no means of further FTL travel. For this reason, jumpless spacecraft have emergency SOS micro-drones which are equipped with jump drives so that a distress signal can be sent.

The topology of hyperspace combined with the limited range of hyperspace travel naturally creates interstellar trade routes. The jump gate network is built to facilitate travel along the nature trade routes.

The only feasible means of communicating between star systems is to physically carry the message to the destination star system and then pass the message to the local communication network. This is usually done by regular trade ships, which download the “post” before they jump to hyperspace, then upload it in at their destination. This means that message travel time is limited to the speed of interstellar travel, but messages do not need to be carried to their final destination on the same ship. At each stop, a message waits for the next available ship independent of refueling times.

Computers, Robotics, & Autonomous Machines

Computers are everywhere. Every person has a mobile device (i.e. smartphone). The network is everywhere when in a habited region. Interplanetary travel will be off the network, but all spacecraft will have a computer that can communicate with the planetary network, though communication speed will be limited to light speed. During hyperspace travel, there is no communication possible with the outside universe.Virtually anything that can be automated is automated. Humans work in supervisory roles, providing assistance to the machines when unexpected situations are encountered. However, most customer service roles are still filled by humans, so while ordering in a restaurant might be done through one’s mobile device, the food may still be brought by a human, or at the very least, a human will check that the customers are happy with their meal.Autonomous machines are transporting people and goods in any inhabited region. A human transport manager may accompany large shipments, but it is the machines that drive themselves. This includes spacecraft. Human involvement is limited to instructing the machine where it should go. Highly skilled operators can give the piloting computer better details on the exact maneuver desired, should such details be important.

Psychic Powers

Psychic powers exist, but are rare in human society. Psychically adept individuals organize themselves into schools where new members are taught to use their abilities. While some schools show clear strengths in certain psychic disciplines, almost every school includes a broad range of psychic abilities. An individual school is more likely to organize around a common philosophy than a common power. Rogue psychics are considered dangerous to the security of all psychics and schools will organize themselves to deal with any individuals who may cause issues for psychics in general. The general public will be wary of any psychic, but respectful if the psychic fits their idea of the monastic psychic.

Political Entities

The major power in the known galaxy is the Imperio Humano – The Empire. It operates as a decentralized, feudal government with small pockets of democratic free systems, known as the Imperial Stars (i.e. star systems that were subordinate to the Emperor directly, rather than a local noble).

Bordering the Imperio Humano are various smaller territories, one of which is the Kingdom of Cantor. It is a constitutional monarchy with Cantor as the most populous planet (c. 10 billion), and main transport hub to the Empire. The capital is Briar (c. 6 billion people), which is easily reachable by Cantor through the jump gate network. The Kingdom of Cantor is recently cut-off from the Empire. Pirates have taken over a transport hub between Cantor and the Empire, while the Crimson transport hub on the longer path has been invaded by aliens. The parliament on Briar has started to colonize the new world of Plum Tree, but many question the logic of such an endeavor when the economy has been so badly hurt by the lose of trade with the Empire.

The Vanir are a psychically-sensitive species that have a post-scarcity society bordering on the Kingdom of Cantor. Given the technological gap between the humans in Cantor and the Vanir, there is very little trade between the two nations, though some Vanir travel to Cantor out of curiosity and some even stay for extended periods of time.

The Sveltifar are a stout species adept at electronics and electro-mechanical machines. Their territory borders on the Imperio Humano and small communities often exist in major human cities.

The Canoids are a large dog-man species of marauding space pirates. Communication with them has been limited and it is unknown what systems they actually inhabit. It is assumed to be on the far side of the Empire. They seem to be very religious, primarily worshiping a dog-headed god of death.

The Goblar are a tall, militaristic species with adept armies. Communication with them has only been through military conflicts. Their goals are poorly understood, so their incursions into human space seem like random occurances.
